An organization in the nation’s capital is helping the homeless develop a new voice in the arts.
Street Sense has published the only newspaper created by and for the homeless in Washington, D.C. for the past 11 years. The organization also has programs in filmmaking, theater, interactive art and digital photography, encouraging participants to learn new skills in the arts.
“Our vision is that we’re a full-spectrum media company, that we’re spreading the word about homelessness,” Brian Carome, executive director of Street Sense, said.
Washington, D.C. government statistics state that are 7,300 homeless people in D.C. and nearly 12,000 in the entire D.C. metro area. But by some measures, the number may be higher; nearly 20,000 families have identified themselves as homeless on a waitlist for housing in D.C.
Street Sense gives 75 percent of its profits to its sellers. It receives half its funding from individual donors, 25 percent from sales, and 15 percent from foundations. The organization aims to provide job opportunities as well as educate the public on issues affecting the homeless, according to Carome.
“The content of our media is meant to impact hearts and minds in this community,” he said.
Sasha Williams, a videographer for the organization, said the organization was helping her develop her professional skills. “They treat me like I’m a genuine colleague. They don’t treat me like I’m just a client,” she said.
